What is the product?
SIM-only, data-only, phone-plus-SIM or fixed wireless. The label tells you what is included—not how it is billed.
An MVNO is not automatically a postpaid contract. Compare the normal tariff first, then decide whether bank rewards, flexible top-ups, voice perks or multi-line tools make the provider a better fit for you.

A fair comparison separates the product, how money is collected, and how long you are committed.
SIM-only, data-only, phone-plus-SIM or fixed wireless. The label tells you what is included—not how it is billed.
Prepaid/upfront, Top Up/pre-funded or postpaid/in arrears. If the source is unclear, DataCost says so.
A once-off purchase, recurring month-to-month service or a fixed term. Recurring does not automatically mean locked in.
These controls do not create a hidden score or name a universal winner. They only show providers that match the choices you can see.
Showing 6 of 6 providers. Public providers remain visible when you select a bank because they do not require you to open another bank account.
Every profile uses the same five decision labels. Conditional rewards and dated promotions are identified beside the claim and excluded from ordinary tariff rankings.

Payment: Prepaid / paid upfront
Hard-cap spend control
Out-of-bundle data is opt-in, with top-ups available when the included allocation runs out.
Useful rollover windows
Paid data rolls to the end of the following month, while paid airtime lasts to the end of the following year.
AirMobile-to-AirMobile calls
Qualifying calls between AirMobile numbers are advertised as free during the current promotion.
A data-only APN setup is not the same as a full mobile voice plan. Check device and SIM-activity rules, and treat dated call promotions separately from normal value.

20% extra data for linked numbers
Official bundle tables show a separate linked-number allocation at the same listed bundle price.
Condition: The Connect number must be linked to the customer’s Capitec banking profile.
1GB monthly credit-card benefit
Qualifying customers can receive 1GB each month on a verified Connect number.
Condition: Requires an active Capitec credit card in good standing; card fees and credit terms still matter.
Free Connect-to-Connect calls
Calls between Capitec Connect numbers are advertised as free without a separate opt-in.
No-expiry bundle choices
The current catalogue includes no-expiry data and voice bundles alongside 1-, 7-, 30- and 60-day options.
The extra data is conditional and does not count in DataCost’s base R/GB. The credit-card benefit also carries card eligibility, fees and good-standing requirements.

Up to 15% back
The current guide advertises up to 15% back in data or eBucks on qualifying SIM-plan and prepaid bundle spend.
Condition: The reward form and rate depend on the qualifying account and eBucks rules.
WhatsApp messaging and voice rewards
FNB advertises an unlimited WhatsApp-messaging reward and 35 voice minutes each month, subject to its terms and fair-use rules.
Condition: Requires a qualifying FNB Connect SIM and account relationship.
Rollover and transfer controls
Eligible data can be rolled over once and selected amounts can be transferred to another FNB Connect number.
Month-to-month SIM plans
Current SIM-only plan material says customers are not locked into a fixed-term contract.
“Up to 15%” is not a universal discount. Account type, eBucks level, earn limits and banking fees can change the real value; device bundles may also introduce a fixed repayment term.

Several current plans combine anytime data with unlimited national calls and SMS, subject to fair use.
Multi-line management
A family account can manage multiple SIMs, balances, top-ups and separate plans from one account.
Unlimited calls and SMS are subject to fair use. The current free trial automatically moves to a paid 5GB monthly plan unless you cancel or change it before the trial ends.

Nedbank Connect offers once-off prepaid bundles and 30-day subscription bundles that can be cancelled in digital banking.
Unlimited calls and SMS on preset plans
Current preset plans include unlimited calls and SMS, subject to fair-use rules.
Greenbacks reward airtime is not cash or data: it cannot buy data, SMSs or subscriptions, expires in the month issued, and varies by Greenbacks level.

Current plan material advertises no-expiry bundle choices and transfers to other Standard Bank Connect users.
Circle calling options
Selected Connected Circle plans include unlimited calling to a stated number of chosen contacts.
Package-specific monthly data
Some current Standard Bank packages advertise extra Connect data with a qualifying monthly subscription.
Condition: The amount and requirements depend on the banking package; account fees and Connect-plan minimums still apply.
Family data sharing
Purchased data can be transferred to another active Standard Bank Connect number, with separate transferred-data validity.
Bank-package data and accessory discounts are conditional, not universal savings. Include the banking package fee and exact qualification rules before calling the MVNO cheaper.

Start with AirMobile’s public data-only option, then compare its current tracked price and your actual device support.
Compare Melon and Nedbank preset voice plans, then read the fair-use rule before treating “unlimited” as unrestricted.
Melon’s multi-line controls and Standard Bank Connect’s sharing features may reduce admin for a family account.
Once-off prepaid rows and hard-cap services are the safer starting point when avoiding surprise spend matters most.
An MVNO sells service under its own brand while using another operator’s radio infrastructure. That relationship is useful context, but it is not a promise of identical coverage, speed, priority, roaming, APN behaviour or support.
Check the MVNO’s own coverage page for home, work and commute locations, test with a prepaid or month-to-month option where practical, and do not port an essential number until the service works for you.
Provider type and host-network relationships are kept as dated, sourced facts. If an official current source is not clear enough, the relationship remains marked as unconfirmed rather than inferred.
No. The current DataCost sample includes once-off prepaid bundles and recurring month-to-month plans. Payment timing, price recurrence and commitment are separate questions, so a monthly price should never be treated as proof of a postpaid fixed-term contract.
Usually when you already hold the qualifying bank account and will genuinely use its data, airtime or reward benefits. Compare the ordinary mobile price first, then subtract only benefits you qualify for and would otherwise have paid for; include any extra banking or card fee.
Do not assume that. An MVNO uses another operator’s network infrastructure, but the service, APN, product rules, roaming arrangements and customer experience can differ. Check the MVNO’s own current coverage information in the places where you use your phone.
Only if it works for the use you need. Reward airtime can have expiry dates or restrictions, and some cannot buy data, SMSs or subscriptions. DataCost therefore keeps reward value outside ordinary tariff rankings.
